Description
“BAC water” usually means bacteriostatic water for injection. It’s sterile water that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol (0.9%), which helps prevent bacterial growth after the vial has been opened.
It’s commonly used to:
-
Reconstitute (mix) powdered medications or peptides
-
Dilute injectable medications
-
Allow multiple uses from the same vial
A few key points:
-
The benzyl alcohol acts as a preservative, so an opened vial can typically be used for up to about 28 days if stored properly.
-
It’s different from sterile water, which has no preservative and is usually single-use.
-
BAC water is not meant for newborns/infants because benzyl alcohol can be dangerous for them.
-
It should only be used for medications specifically intended to be mixed with it.
